Israeli Rabbi Promises Jews Aqsa Prayers

JERUSALEM – The Israeli Religious Affairs Ministry has announced plans to issue a regulation that would legalize Jewish prayers inside Muslims third-most sacred mosque of Al-Aqsa.

“Whoever was permitted by his primary rabbi to ascend to the Temple Mount [Aqsa Mosque] should and may ascend to the Temple Mount and pray there,” Deputy Minister Rabbi Eli Ben-Dahan said in a video message cited by Arutz Sheva on Wednesday, April 30.

“We have set regulations to arrange prayers on the Mount.

“I expect and trust that the prime minister and the Israeli government will adopt these regulations, give them legal standing, and allow any Jew who wants to ascend to the Temple Mount and pray there, to pray there,” he added.

The Israeli official’s controversial remarks were made on Tuesday, April 29, during a conference organized by the Liba Project for Jewish Freedom at Al-Aqsa mosque compound.

Themed “Returning the Temple Mount [Al-Aqsa]” the conference focused on tackling methods to grant Jews a legal access to Al-Aqsa.

“We came to say in a clear voice - enough is enough,” declared Liba Project Director Yehuda Glick.

“The situation of daily harassment of Jews on the Temple Mount cannot continue, not even for another moment.”

Speaking at the conference, Deputy Knesset Chairman MK Moshe Feiglin, said:  “I'm not asking for equality at the Temple Mount; there is no equality - it's ours and ours alone.”

“Whoever doesn't actually walk around the Mount abandons it to the Muslims,” added Feiglin.

“If we don't have a home we don't have a history, and if we don't have a history we aren't a nation, but rather just a religion. If we are just a religion, we don't deserve a Jewish state,” he added.

Al-Aqsa is the Muslims’ first Qiblah [direction Muslims take during prayers] and it is the third holiest shrine after Al Ka`bah in Makkah and Prophet Muhammad's Mosque in Madinah, Saudi Arabia.

Its significance has been reinforced by the incident of Al Isra'a and Al Mi'raj — the night journey from Makkah to Al-Quds and the ascent to the Heavens by Prophet Muhammad (Peace and Blessings be Upon Him).

Jordan has been supervising Al-Aqsa Mosque and other endowments in Al-Quds since 1948.

A 1994 peace treaty between Jordan and Israel recognizes Jordan's special supervisory role over holy sites in Al-Quds.
